Pamela Atsoff

Pamela Atsoff began observing and interpreting the world through the tiny lens of a Kodak Instamatic in 1967. While her cameras have changed and evolved, her love of photography has remained passionate and steadfast. An avid hobbyist and semi-professional, Pamela studied liberal and visual arts at Wayne State University in Detroit. For the last 18 years, the native Michigander has been happy to call Petoskey her home.

Charleviox resident Bill Dietrich is a Real Estate Broker of profession and an aspiring photographer by passion. Bill has shown his work at Crooked Tree Arts Center, Charlevoix Circle of Arts, Jordan River Arts Council, and The Friends of the Jordan. He attributes much of his success in photoagraphy to his membership in the Charlevoix Photography Club and his participation in its workshops and classes. Bill is a Founding Member and serves on the Board of the Club. Bill loves all types of photography and is constantly seeking to capture special moments and to share his perspective through his images.

A lifelong resident of Gaylord, Linda and her husband John have two married daughters and two grandchildren. Linda has worked in the feild of Substance Abuse Prevention for over 24 years and enjoys spending time with her family, boating, traveling, and of course, photography! Currently a Charlevoix Photography Board member, Linda loves wildlife, landscape, and macro photography. She has worked with portrait, wedding and event photography as well. Simply stated; “I enjoy photographing the artwork of God, seeing photography as a way to slow down and truly look at the beauty of the world around us.”

Joan Gerigk

Artists Statement: I love puzzles, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, work puzzles. I love all of it and that is one of the reasons I think that I love painting. Painting is a puzzle whereby you must resolve one problem before you can go on and tackle the next. Then there is always the hope that at the end of this struggle there will be a successful conclusion. I find this process of problem solving very challenging and satisfying.

Of course this is only one reason that I am drawn to painting. I also like the challenge of trying to convey beauty and emotion. The subject matter of my paintings can be quirky or sentimental depending on what has intrigued me about the subject matter. I tend to be more emotionally driven in my approach to painting. I hope that my paintings stimulate the viewer to see life from a different perspective.

Biography: I believe my career began with “Paint by Numbers” when I was in grade school. After completing the Last Supper I thought I was a bona fide artist. However, I only sporadically dabbled in Arts till much later in life when I began painting. I painted water colors and became a mural artist for a while. In 2010 I took an oil painting class in Petoskey and began to paint in oils. I find that painting is the most relaxing and satisfying thing one can do.

Kaye Krapohl

Kaye Krapohl received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan. Kaye has been the recipient of the Hallmark National Gold Medal, National Endowment of the Arts Award, a Governor’s Resident Artist, the 2010 National Sleeping Bear Dunes Lakeshore Artist in Residence, as well as numerous national and regional awards. A resident of Traverse City, she is inspired by the natural beauty of the Region and the unique opportunities it provides for inspiration.

Kim Krumrey

Petoskey resident, Kim Krumrey first studied ceramics at Western Michigan University. She opened her ceramics studio in 1999 after apprenticing with potter/sculpture David Austin for one year. Since then Kim has been self taught, continually experimenting with new techniques and designs. She currently shows her work at fine galleries and participates in juried fine art fairs throughout Michigan. Her work is bold and fun, celebrating color, pattern and shape to create dynamic visual contrast within each piece. The colors she uses are vibrant; the patterns are clean and simple yet bold; and the shapes are often altered to create a sense of movement and playfulness. She uses both wheel thrown and hand building techniques, often combining both in the same piece.

David Pickett

David J. Pickett is a local artist who, as an adult, has largely split his time between Petoskey, Michigan and Los Osos, California. Dave studied art at North Central Michigan College in Petoskey, Sheridan College in Sheridan, Wyoming, the University of Nevada at Reno, and Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, California. Dave works in many medias aside from painting. He does welding for sculpture, nail gun sculpture, stained glass and tile designs. He paints in oil, acrylic, and watercolor. His favorite subjects are house and gardens, interiors, boxing and track, landscapes, and female figures. Mr. Pickett is continually doing studies wherever he is, including hours upon hours at various coffee houses. He paints and draws a great deal of interpretations of master paintings. He often paints with photos or sketches in his studio late into the night. On site painting accounts for about a fourth of his output. Dave has exhibited widely across the country and currently exhibits with two galleries in Petoskey, Michigan, The Shadetree Studio and The Gaslight Gallery.

Artists Statement: I have always been involved some sort of creative process, whether drawing, painting or constructing something in three dimensions. I love the progression, the conception, the problem solving, learning the media, and setting the goal.

I enjoy the mental steps it takes and the challenges that I confront as I go through the evolution. My journey begins somewhere inside and ends up as one piece of art that I have created that will only be produced once, and the satisfaction that I have achieved the goal.

I know of no other human activity that allows a person to use all of their skills and creativity that allows such pleasure and fulfillment as the creative process. I feel fortunate to be able to have the opportunity and skills to be allowed to enjoy this process an am looking forward to what new experiences this journey will bring

Biography: After high school I moved to Emmet County to become a full time artist, however life interfered I needed a full time job. I owned Sign & Design for 40 years retiring in 2014 at which time I began painting full time. I am looking forward to improving my skills and enjoying the journey.

Neil W. Ahrens is a 1998 graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art, Master of Fine Arts in Painting. He also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Michigan State University where he was awarded his department’s highest honors. Anne Morningstar is an Interdisciplinary Artist, whose work embodies the arts of Animation, Film, Book Arts, and Papermaking. In 2008, Morningstar graduated from the Milwaukee Institute of Art + Design with her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Animation. Michelle Dieter

As of January of 2012, Michelle has become very taken with the Photography of Food. Though she has held a camera for 40 years, it has never felt like this. The challenge is thrilling. Michelle is delighted and teased at the same time when she looks at her images admitting not that they are great, but quite the opposite. It’s the yearning to get back on the horse and try again, and delighted when she is not bucked off. She is the mother of one, and wife of another and considers herself fortunate to be surrounded by supporting family and friends, making her blogging fun. Her goal is to make a living with her new passion, be it working in a studio (no job is too small), for a photographer, a magazine, a newspaper, or restaurants.

Katherine Brines

Katherine Brines grew up in Northern Michigan and received her B.F.A in painting and ceramics from Aquinas College in 2007. In 2009, she received a fellowship to attend a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT, where she spent the month painting and interacting with fellow artists and writers in rural Vermont. She was then hired as a resident artist at the Studio Center, working in Admissions and painting the Vermont landscape from 2009-2010. Katherine’s work is inspired by nature and imagined biomorphic ecosystems. Color and experimentation with materials upon a 2-dimensional surface characterize her abstractions. Time spent traveling through Central and Eastern Europe and working on boats on Lake Michigan and the Caribbean allowed for a new perspective on the importance of preserving the water and land in which we inhabit. Maeve Croghan

Maeve Croghan has had a life long deep connection with nature. She grew up spending her summers on Mackinac Island in northern Michigan, living very close to the lakes and forests. Maeve has chosen Nature, in her many different forms, to be the subject her paintings. Her “Nature Portraits” are a unique interpretation of the landscape genre.

Maeve is a recipient of numerous prestigious juried awards and her paintings are exhibited and collected throughout the country. Museum exhibitions include, the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, the Laguna Beach Museum of Art, the Coos Bay Art Museum and the Farmington Museum of Farmington, New Mexico, the Los Gatos Art Museum, of Los Gatos, Ca.

Recently, Maeve’s work was invited for a showing at the Matsumoto Museum in Matsumoto, Japan and the Salt Road Museum in Omachi, Japan. She was personally invited to Japan as an honored ‘Artist Guest’.

Larissa Flynn

Larissa Flynn has vast experience in many aspects of the art world. She received formal training at Kendall College of Art and Design as well as The College for Creative Studies in the areas of graphic design, illustration, and fine art. Although fluent in many mediums her greatest love is drawing. Larissa has operated a fine art gallery and full scale art fairs along with coordinating solo and group shows for many fine artists. Currently she is developing a new body of work and most recently explored the technique of deconstructed screen printing onto fabric.

Sheridan Jones

Much of my art reflects our natural surroundings. Growing up in southern Ohio, exploring the woods, creeks, meadows and farms, I discovered my way of being in the world. The natural world seems to define what is exciting, fluid, tense and calming all at the same time. This beautiful mix of senses is what inspires me. My hope is to bring the excitement I feel in living life into my painting.

I have been enthusiastically painting in pastel for several years, working almost exclusively in the plein air style ~ painting from life in the unpredictable outdoors. This method demands a painting be close to complete before the light no longer tells the same story.

I am a Photographer and Landscape Architect living and working in the Little Traverse Bay area. Alan Maciag

Michigan artist, Alan Maciag, graduated from Central Michigan University with a Masters Degree in Art Education. He has retired after teaching art for the last thirty-two years in the Frankenmuth School District. Alan is an avid drawer whose sketches have served as valuable subject matter to so many of his oil paintings. His inspired works are numerous and are in private collections in California, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Germany and France. Alan’s avid interest in architecture and gardening are reoccurring themes in his current body of work. His rural landscapes are a balance between form, distance, color, and content. Loretta Miles

Making fine art has been a passion my entire life. With strong encouragement to gain practical business knowledge, I followed a business course of study at Wayne Univ. However, from that point on, all studies involved design, art and architecture. My working career has been in design and space planning. Creating pleasant appearing spaces was not the only goal; it was to be able to understand the engineering that allowed stability and to be assured of true functionality. What a joy it has been to “see and feel” the future space while still on the drawing board and only a concept, all this before the wonderful world of computers. During the years of working in the design business, I developed an avid interest in the fine art installed in those spaces, whatever its form. My interest and passion pushed me to continually study, attend workshops and classes in various mediums of art creation—always realizing I had/have so much more to learn. Lisa Poszywak

Lisa Poszywak is a Detroit-based artist working primarily in painting. Her work concentrates on social situations and human interaction, explored by representing the interactions themselves as well as what gets left behind. Carol Ross

After retiring from teaching in the Detroit area, Carol Ross started on a new road. Before the classroom, she developed her artistic skills completing her M.A. in technical theatre at Wayne State University, and then added to her understanding of art by taking industrial design courses with a contract interiors focus at the Center for Creative Studies. Now retired, she continued to take art classes in oil painting from the most successful contemporary artists. California’s Ken Auster gave her introduction to oil plein air on the streets of Chicago, and in Vermont, Eric Aho lead her to a new approach to landscape painting. California’s Plein Air Society’s members Betty Billlups and Jeanette Le Grue both freed Carol to paint with the suggestive brush of the impressionists in contrasting, vivid colors.

Carol is invited yearly to exhibit her paintings at many juried art shows and is shown in galleries in Upper Michigan.

Sandy Selden

Sandy P. Selden grew up in the Chicago area, studied art in Pittsburgh and Detroit, and has lived in the beautiful city of Petoskey for thirty five years.

She has a Master’s degree in painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Carnegie-Mellon University. Her work has appeared in many of Crooked Tree Art Center’s juried shows, the Northern Michigan Artists’ Gallery, and in the homes of collectors and friends. Paula Zammit

The pervasive theme in Paula’s work, whether it be painting, encaustic (which migrates between 2 and 3D application) or some other non-traditional material, such as urethane foam, is her interest in organic form. From her realistic figurative paintings to the biomorphic abstract work she creates, her curiosity and intrigue in the natural world and the parallels existing therein, are undeniable. She holds a BFA (with honors) from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Mi. Aside from a handful of years in St. Louis, she is a life-long Detroit, MI area resident and happy to be immersed in the rebuilding of the North Corktown neighborhood. She is a member of Corktown Studios in Detroit along with fellow artists: Alisyn Malek, Jake Chidester, Lisa Poszywak, Jaye Allen Thomas and Chris Anderson.
